On 5 March 2011 I went to May's Greenhouse and bought:
-Red Pontiac seed potatoes, 4.42#, $2.60 (one was rotten)
-Yukon Gold seed potatoes, 3.65#, $2.15 (all good)
-Yellow Onion sets, 1.4#, $2.01
-Garlic, 3 heads, $3.49 (could I have used grocery store garlic? I don't know...)
-Bale of hay, $4.99 (most expensive hay I've ever bought?)
The Yukon Golds are early potatoes and the Red Pontiacs are late, so I'll hopefully have them throughout the year.
Tonight (10 Mar) I cut up the seed potatoes to get them calloused and ready to plant in a week or so. I read these two websites for advice (http://www.motherearthnews.com/Real-Food/2007-04-01/When-and-How-to-Plant-Potatoes.aspx and http://www.ehow.com/how_5529143_plant-red-pontiac-seed-potatoes.html)
I'll leave these on the windowsill for a week or so (and hope that Stella leaves them alone). Right now I'm not sure if they'll go in two beds in the backyard or in the "new" bed between my house and the next door neighbors. That I originally planned for the in-between-bed to be squash/pumpkins, but maybe potatoes would be better.
This year I'm going to try and grow them up through straw/mulch, instead of soil. Last year I got some very small (in number and size) potatoes, I think in part because the soil was way too compacted and dense.
More on these when they get planted!
